The trip

A city out of a fairytale.

We had an incredible time in Prague. We visited in October 2026, and it's a truly beautiful city that feels like it's straight out of a fairytale. We explored the entire Old Town and the Prague Castle complex, ate our weight in goulash and chimney cakes, and walked the Charles Bridge more than once. It rained for a bit, but the sun did shine, and we were so thankful for it.

Our pro tips and absolute musts: do not walk in high heels, because the whole city is cobblestones. Bring an umbrella or a waterproof jacket in case of rain. And be prepared for a lot of walking! For everything else, the trams are fast, frequent and easy: we bought a 24-hour pass right on board.

Part one

The Old Town

Prague's Old Town (Staré Město) is the fairytale you picture: Gothic spires, pastel palaces and winding cobbled lanes. Walking around Old Town Square was perhaps the most impressive part of the whole trip.

The Astronomical Clock show

📍 Old Town Square

Watching the Astronomical Clock show is a must. Every hour, crowds pack into the square below the Old Town Hall as the apostles appear and the skeleton rings its bell. The clock dates back to 1410 and is the oldest one still working. Arrive a few minutes early to get a good spot, and keep an eye on your bags in the crowd.

Old Town Square & the Týn Church

📍 Old Town Square

Simply walking around Old Town Square was one of our favourite things in Prague. The twin Gothic spires of the Týn Church tower over the square, and the colourful facades all around look straight out of a storybook. Come back after dark: everything is lit up and the atmosphere is magical.

Cobbled lanes & the Powder Tower

📍 Old Town

The best way to see the Old Town is to just walk and get lost. Head through the Gothic Powder Tower, one of the old city gates, and wander the cobbled lanes towards the square. Pro tip: do not walk in high heels. The whole city is cobblestones, and you'll be doing a lot of walking.

Take a free walking tour

📍 Old Town, Jewish Quarter & the Castle

We definitely recommend taking a walking tour. There are a couple of free, tip-based tours: one covers the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter, and another covers the Prague Castle complex. We had a 5 out of 5 experience with our guide at Free Walking Tour Prague. It's the best way to understand the history behind everything you're looking at.

Part two

Charles Bridge & the Vltava

Walking across the Charles Bridge was one of the absolute highlights of our trip, and the views along the river are some of the prettiest in Europe.

Walk the Charles Bridge

📍 Charles Bridge (Karlův most)

The Charles Bridge has linked the Old Town to the castle side of the city since the 14th century, and it's lined with 30 statues of saints. Walking it is an absolute must. It gets very busy in the middle of the day, so go early in the morning or around sunset for a calmer crossing.

Climb a bridge tower

📍 Old Town Bridge Tower or Lesser Town Bridge Tower

We definitely recommend climbing one of the towers on the Charles Bridge. From the top you get an amazing panoramic view down the length of the bridge, across the red rooftops and up to Prague Castle. It's a small fee and well worth the climb.

Along the Vltava

📍 The riverbanks

Take time to walk along the Vltava River. The riverbanks give you the classic postcard view of the Charles Bridge, there are swans everywhere, and we even met a very friendly nutria on the bank! It's a lovely, quieter break from the crowds of the Old Town.

Sunset over the bridges

📍 Above the Vltava

For sunset, head up to a viewpoint above the river and watch the bridges of the Vltava glow as the light fades. If you have extra time, the old hilltop fortress of Vyšehrad is a quieter hidden gem with great views over the river.

Part three

Prague Castle

Up on the hill across the river, the Prague Castle complex is one of the largest castle complexes in the world, with St Vitus Cathedral at its heart. It was an absolute highlight.

The Prague Castle complex

📍 Hradčany

The castle complex is huge: palaces, courtyards, the Old Royal Palace with its vaulted Vladislav Hall, and views over the whole city. Don't forget to get tickets to enter the cathedral and the castle buildings. It isn't obvious that you need them, and the ticket line is long, so book ahead and skip the queue.

St Vitus Cathedral is the centrepiece of the castle and absolutely stunning inside: soaring Gothic arches, a silver tomb, richly painted chapels and some of the most beautiful stained-glass windows we've ever seen. Your castle ticket covers entry. For something different, you can also see the castle by night on a guided walk with city views.

Eating & getting around

Two things we loved about Prague: the hearty food and how easy the city is to get around.

Goulash & chimney cakes

📍 All over the city

For food, we found great local restaurants by simply searching Google for local Czech food and going to the highest-rated options. The goulash (ours came in a bread bowl!) and the chimney cakes (trdelník), sweet rolled pastries you can fill with ice cream, are an absolute must.

Getting around12

Trams & the 24-hour pass

📍 Citywide

Prague's public transport is very effective, and the trams come so frequently, we loved them. We bought the 24-hour pass directly on the tram, which made hopping between the Old Town, the river and the castle hill really easy. Remember to validate your ticket before you ride.
