The trip

Where Western history begins.

Athens is a city you feel as much as see — 2,500 years of history stacked on hills, marble temples glowing above a sprawl of white rooftops, and the Acropolis watching over all of it. Standing in front of the Parthenon was the absolute highlight of the trip. We went in February — a little cloudy and cold, but still an exceptional time to visit, with thin crowds and soft light. Here's exactly where every shot was taken, and the tickets we booked to skip the queues. We visited in February 2024.

The Acropolis & the Parthenon

📍 The Acropolis of Athens

This was the moment we came for. The Parthenon, 2,500 years old and still commanding the skyline, is even more overwhelming in person than you expect — it genuinely stopped us in our tracks. The whole Acropolis rewards a slow wander: the Propylaea gateway, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion. Go as early as you can, wear proper shoes for the polished marble, and give yourself a couple of hours.

The Acropolis Museum

📍 Acropolis Museum · Makrigianni, below the south slope

The perfect companion to the hill itself — a strikingly modern museum built right over an excavated ancient neighbourhood (you walk on glass floors above it). The showstoppers are the original Caryatids, the graceful maiden-columns from the Erechtheion, displayed so you can circle them up close. Book a skip-the-line ticket; the queue outside can be long even in winter.

The Ancient Agora & Stoa of Attalos

📍 Ancient Agora of Athens · below the Acropolis

The old heart of the city — the marketplace where Socrates once argued philosophy. The fully reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, a long two-storey marble colonnade, is the highlight and houses a small museum. It's quieter than the Acropolis and included on the combined ticket, and the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus sits at the far end.

Hadrian's Library & the Roman Agora

📍 Between Monastiraki & Plaka

Tucked right in the old town, the ruins of Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora are easy to fold into a wander through Monastiraki. We loved the quiet stone arches here, with the Acropolis peeking through in the background — one of those spots where you turn a corner and the ancient city just appears. A short, rewarding stop between the big sights.

The Panathenaic Stadium

📍 Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)

The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble, and the home of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. You can walk right down onto the track and climb the steep marble tiers where 50,000 spectators once sat — standing at the bottom looking up is a real moment. It's a quick visit but a memorable one, and the audio guide is worth it.

Monastiraki & Plaka

📍 Monastiraki Square & the Plaka old town

The old town is where Athens is at its most charming. Monastiraki is the buzzing hub — a flea market, street food and rooftop cafés with the Acropolis framed above the square (climb to a rooftop bar for that shot). Wander uphill into Plaka and the tiny Anafiotika lanes, where pastel houses, bougainvillea and cobbled steps feel more like an island village than a capital city.

Filopappou & Areopagus Hills

📍 Filopappou Hill & the Areopagus, opposite the Acropolis

For the best view of the Acropolis — rather than from it — climb the low hills right across from it. The Areopagus rock sits at the entrance and gets busy; carry on up green, pine-scented Filopappou Hill for a wide, uncrowded panorama of the Acropolis, Lycabettus and the whole city. It's free, it's a lovely walk, and it's magic near golden hour.

Sunset over the city from Lycabettus

📍 Lycabettus Hill · the highest point in central Athens

End a day up on Lycabettus, the tallest hill in the city. A funicular (or a stiff walk) takes you to the top, where the whole of Athens spreads out below and the sun drops into the sea beyond the mountains. The sky went molten orange the evening we were there — the perfect, quiet finish to a day among the ruins.
