Volcanoes, lava roads & a Vespa · 7 must-see spots

The trip

It felt like visiting another planet.

Lanzarote was one of the most extraordinary places we've ever been — the landscape genuinely felt like Mars. Black lava fields, volcanic craters, red-and-ochre mountains and roads that cut dead-straight through it all. We rented a Vespa — surprisingly cheap — and drove around basically the entire island, stopping at volcanoes, cactus farms and every photo spot we could find. We went in November and the weather was perfect. The national park is an absolute must. Here's the whole loop, and the tours worth booking. We visited in November 2025.

Timanfaya & the Fire Mountains

📍 Timanfaya National Park · southern Lanzarote

This is the one you come for. Timanfaya is a sea of black lava fields, ochre cones and craters left by 18th-century eruptions — the closest thing to standing on another planet we've ever experienced. The park itself is protected, so you explore the core on an official coach route, and there are guided half-day tours and even a hike across the volcanic landscape. The national park is a must; don't skip it.

Riding the lava roads by Vespa

📍 The LZ roads across the island

Renting a Vespa was the best decision we made here — it was fairly cheap and let us drive around basically the whole island at our own pace, stopping wherever a view grabbed us. The roads run dead-straight through black lava fields with volcanoes on the horizon; it's magical, and they make for incredible photos with barely another soul around. If two wheels isn't your thing, guided buggy tours cover the off-road bits.

Jardín de Cactus

📍 Jardín de Cactus · Guatiza

One of the island's prettiest stops — a cactus garden built into an old quarry by the artist César Manrique, terraced with thousands of cacti of every shape and a restored white windmill crowning the top. The giant round barrel cacti against the black volcanic gravel are ridiculously photogenic. It's compact, easy to fit into a driving loop, and a lovely break from the lava fields.

The slot canyons & rock arches

📍 Eroded sandstone formations · northern Lanzarote

Tucked away off the main roads are these wild wind-carved sandstone canyons and arches — smooth, striped walls that glow gold in the sun and feel straight out of the American Southwest, only volcanic. Squeezing through the narrow slot and framing a shot through a natural rock arch were some of our favourite photos of the whole trip. Having the Vespa made finding these little spots half the fun.

Mirador del Río & La Graciosa

📍 Mirador del Río · far north of the island

At the island's northern tip, the cliffs drop away to reveal the little island of La Graciosa floating in impossibly blue water — one of the best viewpoints in the Canaries. We timed it for late afternoon when the red earth glows and the light turns golden over the water. Whether from the official Mirador or the wild clifftop pull-offs nearby, this is the sunset spot of the island.

Lava gardens & caves

📍 Jameos del Agua & the northern lava tubes

The north of the island is riddled with lava tubes and caves, and the most famous — Jameos del Agua — was turned by Manrique into a surreal garden of palms, white-washed stone and a hidden lagoon inside a collapsed volcanic tunnel. Above ground, the whole area is a maze of pale eroded rock and hollows to wander. It's the perfect blend of raw volcanic landscape and the island's signature design.

Craters, cones & the big picture

📍 Volcanic viewpoints across Lanzarote

Beyond the headline sights, half the magic is just how much of the island is raw volcano — cinder cones, craters and lunar plains at nearly every turn. We kept pulling over for one more impossible view. If you'd rather have it all mapped out in a day without a scooter, a full highlights tour loops the island's best volcanic and Manrique sights in one go — a great option if you're short on time.
