The three Great Pyramids of Giza rising from the desert

The trip

5,000 years of history in one skyline.

Cairo is chaos and wonder in equal measure — the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World on one horizon, a thousand minarets on the other, and the Nile threading it all together. We split our days between the Giza plateau, Old Cairo, and the riverfront. Here's exactly where every shot was taken, ranked by what we'd tell you not to miss, with the tours we actually booked. One honest tip: we went in August and it was ferociously hot — if you can, come in a cooler season (autumn through spring) and you'll enjoy the plateau far more. We visited in August 2024.

The Great Pyramid of Giza

📍 Pyramid of Khufu · Giza Plateau

The last of the Seven Wonders still standing, and somehow bigger in person than any photo prepared us for. We went right at opening (8am) to beat the heat and the crowds, bought the general plateau ticket, and still couldn't get over the block-by-block scale — each stone is taller than most people.

The Great Sphinx

📍 Great Sphinx of Giza · Giza Plateau

Guardian of the plateau for 4,500 years, carved from a single ridge of limestone. The classic angle lines you up beside the paws with Khafre's pyramid behind; we came early for clean light and fewer heads in frame. It's a two-minute walk from the pyramids, so we paired them in one morning.

📍 Giza Plateau panorama point

Yes, it's touristy — and yes, we still think it's worth it. A short camel ride out to the panorama point gives you all three pyramids in one frame with the desert rolling out behind. Agree the price and duration up front, and tip your handler. It's the shot everyone comes home with for a reason.

The whole Giza plateau

📍 Giza Panorama Viewpoint · Giza

Step back far enough and all three pyramids — Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure — plus the little queens' pyramids stack into one clean line. This is where we got the wide desert shot (and the obligatory jump photo). Late afternoon gives you golden light and long shadows.

Sunset over the pyramids

📍 Rooftop views · Giza

As the sun dropped behind the pyramids, the whole plateau turned to silhouette above the city rooftops. Loads of Giza guesthouses and cafés have rooftop terraces angled straight at the view — we grabbed a mint tea, timed it for golden hour, and just watched.

The Citadel & Muhammad Ali Mosque

📍 Saladin Citadel · Old Cairo

A hilltop fortress crowned by the alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with its silver Ottoman domes and pencil minarets. The terrace gave us one of the best skyline views in the city — a sea of minarets fading into the haze. Dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes inside.

The Nile from above

📍 Cairo Tower · Gezira Island, Zamalek

For the big-picture view of the city, we rode up the Cairo Tower on Gezira Island. The Nile splits the frame, feluccas drift below, and on a clear day you can pick out the pyramids on the far horizon. Sunset is the sweet spot — go a little before and watch the city light up.

Sunset felucca on the Nile

📍 Nile felucca docks · Central Cairo

The gentlest way to end a Cairo day: a traditional felucca sailboat gliding along the Nile as the sky turns pink and the call to prayer drifts across the water. We went at golden hour — bring a few snacks or book a dinner cruise, and let the city slow down for an hour.
