Hanoi & Ninh Binh

a city & a day trip · 8 must-see spots

The trip

Hot, chaotic and completely wonderful.

We went in July, so be warned — it was hot. But Hanoi more than made up for it: an Old Quarter that never stops moving, some of the best street food we've ever eaten, and the famous Train Street, where a real train squeezes past café tables inches from your knees. Then we swapped the city for a day trip to Ninh Binh — the towering limestone karsts people call "Ha Long Bay on land." Here's exactly where every shot was taken, and the two tours we booked to make it all easy. We visited in July 2026.

The famous Train Street

📍 Train Street · Old Quarter (near Le Duan)

A working railway line running straight between rows of tiny cafés, so narrow you can touch both sides. You grab an egg coffee or a beer at a trackside table, and a few times a day a real train roars through while the staff wave everyone back against the wall — there's a clip of exactly that further down. It's the most Hanoi thing we did. Check the train times when you arrive (the cafés know them) so you're there for a pass-through, and always listen to the staff.

Old Quarter street food

📍 Hanoi Old Quarter · around Hàng Nón & Hàng Giầy

This is the reason to come to Hanoi. Perch on a knee-high plastic stool on the pavement and work your way through bún, fresh spring rolls, noodle soups, clay-pot rice and the famous Hanoi egg coffee. We did an evening street food tour that not only fed us at spot after spot but also walked us through the hidden alleyways and down the Train Street with someone who actually knew the stories — easily one of the best things we booked.

Tran Quoc Pagoda & West Lake

📍 Tran Quoc Pagoda · West Lake (Hồ Tây)

A calm break from the Old Quarter's noise. Tran Quoc is the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, a slim red tower on a tiny islet reached by a causeway out into West Lake. We went in the late afternoon when the light was soft and the whole thing reflects in the water — a lovely, quiet half-hour and an easy walk or ride from the centre.

The Hanoi Flag Tower

📍 Cột cờ Hà Nội · Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

This 200-year-old brick tower flying an enormous Vietnamese flag is one of Hanoi's symbols, and it sits inside the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long — a UNESCO World Heritage site that's well worth an hour if you like a bit of history between meals. A quiet, uncrowded stop, and that red flag against the sky is a striking shot.

The Trang An boat ride

📍 Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex · ~2 hrs from Hanoi

The highlight of the whole day. You sit low in a little rowboat and a local oarsperson takes you down a jade-green river, through low water-caves you have to duck for, and between limestone peaks draped in jungle — this is the "Ha Long Bay on land" everyone talks about, and it lived up to it. We did it as a full day tour from Hanoi that also packed in Mua Cave, the ancient capital at Hoa Lu and the vast Bai Dinh pagoda. Doing it in one guided, transport-sorted day is exactly how we'd recommend it.

The Mua Cave viewpoint

📍 Mua Cave (Hang Múa) · Ninh Binh

Around 500 stone steps climb to a ridge crowned by a carved dragon, and the reward is the postcard panorama of Ninh Binh — the Tam Coc river winding between green karst peaks as far as you can see. It's a proper little workout, especially in July's heat, so go early, take water, and wear real shoes. Worth every step.

The lotus fields

📍 Lotus ponds below Mua Cave · Ninh Binh

At the foot of the Mua Cave climb sit huge ponds of pink lotus, and we'd timed it perfectly — summer is peak bloom, so the flowers were everywhere. It was one of those "is this real?" moments: waist-high lotus in front, sheer green mountains behind. If you're coming in July, this is the upside of the heat.

Cycling the countryside

📍 Village lanes around Trang An & Tam Coc

Between the boat and the viewpoint we got on bikes and pedalled the flat little lanes through rice paddies, past water buffalo, red flags and sleepy villages. It's the best way to feel the pace of rural Vietnam, and it's genuinely easy riding — no hills, just green in every direction.
