The trip

Easy island days from the cruise port.

We hit Falmouth on Jamaica's north coast in February 2026, and the weather was exceptional — endless sun and some of the clearest, warmest water we've swum in anywhere. Falmouth is one of the island's big cruise ports, so we arrived by ship and had an excursion booked in advance, which we'd honestly recommend: having a plan or a local guide makes the day smooth and stress-free. Between the beaches, a gentle bamboo raft down the Martha Brae River and that famous glowing lagoon, it's a brilliant slice of Jamaica.

What we loved

A short, sweet day trip's worth of the best of Jamaica's north coast — sea, river and island soul.

The beaches & crystal-clear water

📍 Jamaica's north coast, around Falmouth

The water here genuinely lived up to the postcards — warm, calm and so clear you can see your feet in the shallows. The north-coast beaches around Falmouth and neighbouring Montego Bay are the easy, do-nothing highlight: soft pale sand, gentle turquoise water and reggae drifting from the beach bars. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and just settle in.

Bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae

📍 Martha Brae River, near Falmouth

This was the highlight of our day — gliding down the calm, jade-green Martha Brae River on a long bamboo raft, poled along by a local captain through walls of bamboo and forest. It's peaceful, scenic and surprisingly romantic, with little riverside craft stalls along the way. A private tour straight from the cruise port made it effortless.

Island vibes & the Luminous Lagoon

📍 Glistening Waters, near Falmouth

Falmouth's soul is pure Jamaica — reggae, jerk, "one love" and the friendliest welcome in the Caribbean. If you can stay into the evening, the nearby Luminous Lagoon is unforgettable: microscopic organisms make the water glow an electric blue as you move through it, one of only a handful of bioluminescent bays on earth. A boat tour is the easiest way to see (and swim in) it.
